Himalayan Teachers' Project October 2011 update on Lhi School, Nubri, Nepal
Fund
raising for this project was done in Canada last winter with the aim of
raising enough to train 4 young women as teachers. With CANepal paying
salaries while the girls are acting as Reading Angels in Lhi, it turned
out there was enough money raised to train 5 teachers, and we may be
able to stretch this to training for 6 young women, with a bit of
finagling.

A
couple of Australians, Jodi and Phil Tweed (www.StyleAlliance.org) have been working on
improving conditions at the school. They trekked up to Lhi with a couple
of our teachers (Pema Norbu and Niraj Chitrakar) and some of our
students, Lhakpa Diki B332a, Srijana B312, Tashi Choden B286 & Dorje
Tsering B327.
Jodi reports that they were able to
* paint the school
* build library shelves
* deliver many supplies and teaching resources
* double school enrolments with the lunch program which runs all the time
* start a child sponsorship program...already 1/3 of them are sponsored since they arrived back in Australia
While they were in Lhi, they saw that
* with the increase of students there are simply not enough classrooms
They decided to help the Lhi kids go on to Class 6, and "met with CANepal on our return to Kathmandu and they have agreed to
build and pay for an extension of the school if we arrange to fit it out
and provide all the education supplies and continue with the lunch
program. "
